We absolutely love highlighting our sites and sharing all of their wonderful outreach efforts to help our community! In preparation of the Thanksgiving holiday, Growing Legacy Early Learning Center hosted their annual Thanksgiving hot lunches and fresh produce giveaway. This event relieved families from the stress of Thanksgiving holiday expenses. We interviewed the site's director, Dionne Bowick, about the event. See below for her interview.
What was the purpose of the event, and who was it meant to support?
I host the Thanksgiving hot lunches and fresh produce giveaway annually. The purpose of this event is to help families who are experiencing food insecurity and to provide meals for their families to support their Thanksgiving holiday.
Have you done an event like this before and what inspired you to organize it this year?
I host a variety of different produce, and food giveaways annually. When I began my childcare journey years ago, I was inspired to support families who are experiencing food insecurity and poverty. It is my goal to support the needs of each family that is in our care.
What was inside the green bags, and how were those items chosen?
The green bags contained fresh produce such as carrots, apples, collard greens, onions, and a variety of potatoes. I partnered with DINE of Durham County and Farmer Food Share. Between these organizations and partnerships, they selected the produce for each bag based upon their availability.
What impact do you think the event had on the community?
The parents and families of this center and surrounding community look forward to receiving their produce bags and receiving a hot meal for Thanksgiving.
Do you plan to continue or expand events like this in the future?
Yes, I plan to continue my outreach efforts to support the needs of the community and the families that we serve. My goal is to partner with more organizations to provide more food and close the food insecurity gap for families who are struggling to provide quality meals for families.
