Resource Round Up: Literacy Initiatives at Durham’s Partnership for Children

This week we are featuring on of the Durham PreK Partner agencies, Durham's Partnership for Children! In addition to being the contract manager of NC Pre-K in Durham, they have many programs for children and families, including initiatives focused on literacy skills. Their work strives "to ensure every child in Durham enters school ready to succeed, we lead community strategies for children birth to age 5 and their families that promote healthy development and learning and enhance access to high-quality care." Services and Programs

  • Dolly Parton's Imagination Library - Families can register for FREE to receive 1 high-quality, developmentally appropriate book per month from the time a child is born until they turn 5 years old.
  • Reach Out and Read - "A national program that supports [pediatricians] in their efforts to foster healthy bonding and brain development" by using books as part of the exam as they “prescribe” reading daily with young children and families. The Partnership is one of eighteen Smart Start local partnerships that received funding to provide or expand ROR in their communities."
  • Durham's Campaign for Grade-level Reading - A national and local collaborative effort focused on school readiness, summer learning, and school attendance to increase reading proficiency from 45.7% to 70% by 2025.
