On February 28, 2026, 85 Durham PreK Teachers participated in the annual A.S.K. Conference! The theme for this year was "Math Magic: Math is More Than Just Counting". This interactive training facilitated by Dr. Fredrique Yova allowed teachers to learn ways to become more intentional about math in their classrooms. Teaching math with intentionality in preschool is essential because it lays the foundation for children's future academic success while supporting their overall cognitive development.

When educators plan math experiences purposefully-rather than relying on incidental learning, children build a stronger understanding of key concepts such as number sense, patterns, measurement, and problem solving. Intentional math instruction also promotes critical thinking and reasoning skills, encourages children to make connections to real-life situations, and helps them develop confidence as learners.

Teachers learned at the conference that designing activities that are engaging, developmentally appropriate and connected to the children's everyday experiences is vitally important. Teachers were also reminded that young learners are not only acquiring math knowledge but are learning to enjoy and value mathematics as part of how they understand the world!
